Art Session for Fistula Patients
Project Overview
Forty Students, Four Translators, One Instructor
In the summer of 2024 Bethany and her husband Michael travelled to the south-west Africa country of Angola. While there Bethany ran an art session for about forty patients and family members in the fistula village at CEML Hospital. She taught the basics of graphite drawing focusing on various animals. Students both listened to Bethany speak about herself and the process of drawing (and waited for translation in Portuguese, Umbundu, Nyaneka, and other tribal dialects) and each student got a chance to introduce themselves.
Bethany then demonstrated various drawing techniques and each student got to try drawing also, both freehand and colouring pages. Some just enjoyed drawing basic shapes while others were quite adept (see student example here) from the start! Bethany heard that the students enjoyed it so much they forgot themselves and that they should stop and make lunch. For more information please visit the CEML Hospital Website at www.ceml.org.
